Are Typos Okay?

I am what my friends call a spelling and grammar Nazi, however, when it comes to blogging there is a place for typos.  For example, my brother misspelled “Scientologist”.  He spelt it “Scientoloigist” on his blog.  When I saw that, I emailed him and had a mini spaz attack… then I Googled the misspelling and it turns out that he is now at the top of the google searches if you Google “Scientoloigist”.  How crazy is that?!  Later, I found this great article by Copyblogger which talks about how to make typos fun and engaging.
The basic lesson here today is, while typos can really bother people like me (who actually pay attention) most people don’t pay attention and make typos themselves when they search on Google, Yahoo and other search engines. If you manage to dominate a search because you messed up, revel in it!

Disclaimer: This does not now give you license to start misspelling right and left – please use this power responsibly. If you want to dominate a certain typo search, try working it in to your post as a joke or example.   :)

Have you ever done a blogging boo-boo that turned out to be to your advantage?  Let me know!

  1. hey! i randomly came upon your blog while i was browsing around on wordpress. anyhoo, your story is hilarious!

ive never really paid attention to my own personal typos and considered checking my typo on a search engine. however, i do often make typos when i type words in search engines and find numerous sites with the same typos!

    thanks for sharing!

  2. Thanks for the comment! I thought I was being pretty clever, because I worked the typo “Scientoloigist” into my own post, and now if you google it, I’m second up! :)

  3. Or, at least I was second up. :(
